Tribal Council Recommends Healthier Eating Options

Tribal leadership recognizes the health concerns in the Lumbee Community. American Indians have a high rate of a stroke, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Unhealthy eating habits can contribute to these health concerns. In the tribal council special called meeting held tonight, January 25, adopted the resolution CLLR-2019-0125-03 “Eat Smart, Healthy Food Leadership”. This resolution is to promote wellness, disease prevention, healthy eating, and healthy living among its membership at all times, specifically for tribal events.

The Spring Moon Garden Patch is one way that the Tribal Government is moving forward with healthy eating. The Spring Moon Garden Patch allow students who participates in the Lumbee Tribe’s Boys and Girls Club to understand healthy eating and living. The garden also teaches youth agricultural lessons such as planting, harvesting, and maintaining a garden. It is an opportunity to bring the Lumbee people back to the land.
