Lumbee Boys and Girls

Our Lumbee Boys and Girls are having a fruitful week this week as they learn about Lumbee Culture while making Chaney berry Necklaces. The children in the after school program with the Hawkeye Boys & Girls Club began their Chaney berry necklace project this week. Chaney berry necklaces are a traditional art form of Lumbee People. The berries are harvested from the seed or burr of China Berry Tree or what our people call a Chaney Berry Tree. The children are learning not only about how the beads are prepared from the burr, but also are incorporating stories about the four tribal colors of the Lumbee Tribe. This cultural class will be taught to children at all the Lumbee Tribe Boys & Girls Club centers.
