PEMBROKE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB AND SOUTHERN SPIRIT BOYS & GIRLS CLUB EARN ‘PAINTING A BRIGHTER FUTURE’ GRANT FROM The LUMBER RIVER TRADING/TRUE VALUE HARDWARE, The HARDWARE TRUE VALUE – FAIRMONT, AND PEMBROKE TRUE VALUE HARDWARE STORES.

Two Lumbee Tribe Boys & Girls Clubs will receive 60 gallons of paint to improve facilities before the start of the school year

Pembroke, Lumberton and Fairmont NC, August 1, 2017 – As students across Robeson County get ready to go back to school, the Lumbee Tribe’s Pembroke and Southern Spirit Clubs are getting a fresh coat of paint thanks to a partnership with Lumber River Trading/True Value Hardware, Pembroke True Value Hardware, and The Hardware True Value - Fairmont. These Clubs are two of many across the nation selected to receive ‘Painting a Brighter Future’ grants.

Every day, 11 million kids are left unsupervised after school. Boys & Girls Clubs are there to provide kids with quality after-school programming to keep them on track to academic success and a great future. More than 4,100 Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide serve nearly 4 million kids, providing resources and after school support to help kids graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrate good character and citizenship, and lead a healthy lifestyle. In Pembroke, the Lumbee Tribe’s Boys & Girls Club serves over 150 members in grades 1-12 and the Southern Spirit Club serves over 70 members in grades 1-12.

“The beginning of school is the start of a new year for our Clubs, so thanks to this partnership we are able to present a refreshed inviting atmosphere for our kids this year,” said Dr. Rose Marie Lowry-Townsend, Youth Services Manager for the Lumbee Tribe. “We are grateful for our local True Value’s support as we help area kids build great futures and start the school year off right.”

The Clubs will use the donation to paint the gym, improve the welcome area and learning spaces in the clubs.

‘Painting a Brighter Future’ is the signature program of the True Value Foundation, uniting True Value retailers with Boys & Girls Clubs across the country. In total, the True Value retailers will donate nearly 3,000 gallons of paint to Clubs across the nation this year. The program also provides grants to elementary, junior high, and high schools in neighborhoods nationwide.

On hand for the paint presentation was Al Locklear , owner of the Lumber River Trading/True Value Hardware; Don Oxendine representing The Hardware True Value - Fairmont, owners Kathy Ellefson and Stein Effefson; and Lindsey Locklear, owner of Pembroke True Value Hardware. Mr. Jamie Atkins, a representative out of the Asheville regional office, assisted in making the presentation to club members and staff.
