We Still Believe

Prayers are with the family of former Lumbee Tribal Council Member Mr. Roderick Locklear.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of former Lumbee Tribal Council Member Mr. Roderick Locklear. Mr. Rod passed away on September 6, 2022. He will be remembered for the difference he made in the lives of our Lumbee people over the past 50 years. Mr. Rod worked as a federal employee in Washington and Maryland before returning to work in his tribal community. In 2001, he was elected on the first Lumbee Tribal Council. He represented District 17. He was also a founding member of LRDA (Lumbee Regional Development Association) and continued to work as the LRDA WIOA Project Manager. Lumbee Tribal Chairman John Lowery worked with Mr. Rod over the years in the workforce arena and said he always appreciated his expertise. “Mr. Rod was a good man and never hesitated to share his knowledge about our history and tribal programs. He will be truly missed,” said Lowery.

Mr. Roderick Glenn “Rod” Locklear was born February 1, 1939 and departed this life Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at the age of 83. He was preceded in death by his parents: Rev. Clarence Eden & Mrs. Annie Lizzie Oxendine Locklear; brothers: Mr. William Caster Locklear, Mr. Lock Brantley Locklear, Mr. Robert L. Locklear, Mr. Clarence “Ted” Locklear, Mr. Joel Garth Locklear; sisters: Ms. Annie St. John, Ms. Gracie L. Griffin and Ms. Gerlene Locke.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday, September 10, 2022, at Mt. Airy Baptist Church with the Revs: Kelvin Locklear, Dr. Mike Cummings, Adrian Hammonds and Steve Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Airy Church Cemetery. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 62 years: Mrs. Ruth L. Locklear of the home; his sons: Mr. Roderick Glenn Locklear, Jr. and Mr. Clarence Eden Locklear II both of Pembroke; three granddaughters: Mrs. Jessica “Tori” Troxel(Nick), Ms. Drew M. Locklear both of Indiana and Ms. Sydney L. Locklear of Florida; four great-grandchildren-whom he adored: Lyle J. Troxel, Lauren A. Troxel, Laine A. Troxel and Lily V. Troxel; brothers: Mr. Bundy R. Locklear and Mr. Timothy A. Locklear both of Lumberton; sister: Mrs. Vera Malcolm of Pembroke; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and his fur friend: Lucky.

The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Saturday, September 10, 2022 at Mt. Airy Baptist Church.
