Lumbee History Fact of the Day provided by Harlen Chavis Jr. (Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina THPO Officer)
Southeastern tribes used the burn & scrape method to process Cypress, Long Leaf Pine, & Poplar trees to make dugout canoes.
Tribes in the Carolinas stood in dugout canoes and used push poles instead of paddles to navigate canoes through swamps and meandering rivers, especially the Lumbee River.
Seen here is Lumbee Tribe Fire Keeper Reggie Brewer standing in the dugout canoe named Wisdom in the Lake at the Lumbee Cultural Center. The canoe Wisdom can be seen at the Museum of the Southeast American Indian on campus at UNCP.
