The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina was excited to host U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials in Lumbee territory yesterday.
During their visit, Tribal Administration and federal officials discussed efforts to strengthen relationships and explore opportunities for collaboration regarding emergency preparedness and disaster assistance, federal grant funding, public safety, combating human trafficking and drug-related activity, enhanced Tribal identification credentials, and future federal partnerships.
“I’m grateful to the officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security who came to our Lumbee homelands just a few weeks after Secretary Mullin’s visit. We discussed how we can work together to improve access to disaster assistance, advance enhanced tribal ID cards for our citizens, protect our young people from sex trafficking and abuse, and address the drug challenges affecting our tribal citizens and neighbors. I appreciate their willingness to hear directly from us about what our communities need, and I look forward to continuing this work together,” said Lumbee Tribal Chairman John Lowery.
We appreciate the Department of Homeland Security’s commitment to helping the Lumbee Tribe and its citizens. We look forward to building upon these conversations and continuing to strengthen our federal partnerships.
