Lumbee Tribal Chairman John L. Lowery and Tammy Maynor, Lumbee Tribe Director of Governmental Affairs, were both recently invited to speak at the Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations Annual Conference. During the visit, they both shared the story of the Lumbee Fairness Act and discussed the Tribe’s government, housing programs, and work at the state and federal levels. Their Native Hawaiian hosts shared their history and culture and welcomed them into their homestead communities. The conversation also opened opportunities to exchange knowledge about programs serving their respective communities. Chairman Lowery extended an invitation for Council representatives to visit Lumbee homelands. 

The Lumbee Tribe thanks Chairman Kipukai Kuali‘i and Senior Advisor Robin Danner for the invitation and for a meaningful discussion about sovereignty and self-determination. Chairman Lowery said he was inspired by what he learned about Native Hawaiian efforts to strengthen self-governance and assert their sovereign rights. The Tribe looks to turn this exchange into a lasting partnership that strengthens our communities and advances our shared commitment to sovereignty and self-determination.
