Last week, Lumbee Tribal Chairman John L. Lowery and Legal and Compliance Officer Danielle McLean participated in the White House Tribal Leadership Conference, where attendees heard from Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin, Secretary of the Treasury Brandon Beach, Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs William Kirkland, and others. A key discussion focused on resources the U.S. Department of Homeland Security can provide to help Tribal governments combat the production and sale of narcotics in their communities.
Chairman Lowery said his administration will explore how the Lumbee Tribe can work with federal partners to address this urgent issue. Drug dealers continue to bring poison into Lumbee territory and harm Tribal citizens and their families. Chairman Lowery also met with Clayton Fulton, Chief of Staff for the Indian Health Service, to learn more about IHS services and discuss how the Tribe can develop the Lumbee River Health System and ensure it protects and strengthens practices owned and operated by Tribal members.
