Lumbee Inauguration Ceremony to be held Jan. 7


PEMBROKE — The Lumbee Tribe’s new chairman and council representatives will be sworn-in during a ceremony on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016.

The Lumbee Inauguration Ceremony for Tribal Chairman-Elect and Tribal Council-Elect will be held at 6 pm at the Givens Performing Arts Center in Pembroke.

A reception will follow at the University Center Annex. Food will be served.

Harvey Godwin, Jr. will be sworn-in as the new chairman. Godwin won the tribal election on November 17. He received 41 percent of the votes cast. The race included four other candidates, including incumbent Paul Brooks, Terry Collins, Bobbie Jacobs-Ghaffar and Lynn Jacobs.

Godwin is the owner and CEO of Two Hawk Employment Services and Two Hawk Workforce Services.

He serves on the Board of Directors for the Lumber River Workforce Development Board. He is chairman of the Julian T. Pierce Memorial Scholarship Fund at UNC-Pembroke and chairman for the Robeson Community College Foundation Board of Directors.

The new council members who will be sworn-in are: LaKishia Spaulding Sweat in District 1; Jonathan Locklear, District 2; Bobby Oxendine, District 5; Dr. Reginald Oxendine Jr., District 7; Janet Locklear, District 10; and Barbara Lowery, District 14.

The outgoing council members are Evan Davenport, Robert Chavis, Terry Collins and Homer Fields.
