This week, staff from the Catawba Nation visited the Lumbee Tribe Agriculture and Natural Resources Department. The Lumbee Tribe and the Catawba Nation have been working to collaborate and develop ways to create indigenous foodways between the two tribes. During the visit, the Lumbee and Catawba toured local with Lumbee farmers to see their operations and hear how they are focused on Native food sovereignty. The staff members also toured the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources’ new ag Clean Room at the Lumbee Tribe Cultural Center. They participated in a vegetable cleaning demonstration. This new facility was built for cleaning, drying, chopping, and packaging fresh cut vegetables grown by local farmers.
