The Lumbee Tribe was proud to participate in the National Indian Health Board (NIHB) National Tribal Health Conference, a week-long gathering that brought together American Indian and Alaska Native Tribal leaders, health professionals, advocates, and partners from across Indian Country.

The National Indian Health Board (NIHB) is led by Executive Director A.C. Locklear, a proud citizen of the Lumbee Nation. The conference also featured Lumbee citizens Ciera Locklear, Courtney Chavis, and Jada Allen, who participated in panels and workshops and shared their knowledge and experiences in Tribal healthcare.

The conference highlighted the interconnectedness of Tribal health policy, advocacy, and best practices in behavioral, public, and community health. Throughout the week, participants engaged in Tribal consultation sessions, hands-on training opportunities, plenary sessions, and workshops focused on health issues facing Tribal communities.

“By learning how other Tribal Nations are addressing their healthcare needs, we gained insight into how the Lumbee Tribe can strategically plan and position itself for the future of healthcare in our community,” said Tribal Chairman John Lowery. “We were also pleased to meet with newly appointed Indian Health Service Director Mark Cruz and invite him to visit the Lumbee Nation in the near future.”

Sessions addressed topics including Indian health funding, the business of medicine, health equity, Indigenous determinants of health, Tribal public health, behavioral health, culture, environmental health, and climate change. The conference also placed special emphasis on the health and well-being of Native youth, Tribal veterans, and elders.

Chairman Lowery and Tribal staff also met with Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community President Martin Harvier. As President Harvier’s term draws to a close later this year, Chairman Lowery thanked him and the Community for their longstanding friendship and support of the Lumbee Tribe and extended his best wishes for the next chapter of his life and service.
