Since our Enrollment Office reopened for updates, we have been welcoming Lumbee families from near and far as they come to update their tribal enrollment. Today Tribal Chairman Lowery had an opportunity to visit with Mr. WJ Strickland, his wife Barbara and their daughter Carmelia as they updated their enrollment.  Mr. WJ and his family have been instrumental in helping Lumbee Families for more than 50 years. Mr. WJ helped start Lumbee Regional Development Association (LRDA) and was also instrumental in helping to raise money to rebuild Old Main after it burned in the early 1970’s.

They later moved to the DC, Virginia area where Mrs. Barbara worked at the Smithsonian, but they were known to so many by sharing Lumbee cuisine through their catering business in the DC/ capital/Virginia area. Mr. WJ also helped many Lumbee People get their start as they moved North to Washington, Virginia, or Maryland.
