Pembroke, NC (October 20, 2025) – The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina Department of Energy will now accept applications for the Heating Assistance Program (HAP) from January 5, 2026 through January 30, 2026. The department staff was scheduled to begin receiving applications on November 3rd, but due to the government shutdown the program needed to be pushed back.

LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) provides vital assistance to help eligible households with energy costs during the coldest months of the year. The Department of Energy is committed to ensuring that families in need are able to stay safe and warm this winter. “We understand that many families rely on this support, especially during the winter season,” said Tony Hunt, Director of Client Services/Department of Energy Manager. “Despite the current government shutdown and the decision to delay our Heating Assistance Program, our priority is to ensure that we will be able to provide the necessary assistance that our Tribal Community relies on yearly.”
