Filing begins August 24 for Tribal Election
The filing period for the upcoming election will begin on August 24, according to Sheila Beck-Jones,chairman of the Lumbee Tribe Election Board. The Election Board recently met and established important dates for the upcoming Tribal Election. The Election will be held November 17, 2015.
The filing period will close on September 18. Tribal Chairman Paul Brooks' seat will be up for
election along with seven seats on the Tribal Council. The seats up for election are District 1,
held by Evan Davenport; District 4, held by Jonathan Locklear; District 5; held by Bobby Oxendine;District 7, held by Robert Chavis; District 9, held by Anita Hammonds Blanks; District 10; held by Terry Collins; and District 14, held by Homer Fields. Robert Chavis, Terry Collins,and Homer Fields have all served two consecutive terms and are ineligible to seek re-election.
The filing fee to run for chairman is $500. The filing fee for tribal members seeking a seat
on the Tribal Council is $250. To be eligible to run for chairman, the tribal member must
be at least 35 years old and maintained their residence within the tribal territory for one year.
Tribal members running for Tribal Council must be at least 21 and have maintained their
residence in the council district they are seeking for at least one year. As far as voting,
tribal members will be able to request absentee ballots from September 28 until
October 30. Absentee ballots must be returned by 5 pm on November 16. The tribe's
Enrollment Office will close October 16 and will remain closed until the election
results are certified.
