Elderly Housing Site opening soon

PEMBROKE — Construction of the Lumbee Tribe’s new elderly housing site

is coming along swiftly, despite the recent winter weather.

Anthony Holden, who is over the New Construction Department, said the $7

million project known as Pembroke Senior Village is 80 percent complete.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 11 am on August 14.

The Lumbee Tribe is building 50 housing units on Candy Park Road, less

than a mile from the Tribal Housing Complex. The rental units will be for

elders who are 62 and older and meet the income requirements.

Holden said he hopes to begin moving in the first residents in July.

“We are excited about this new project,” Holden said. “This administration,

along with the Tribal Council, has always stressed the importance of

providing safe and affordable housing for our tribal members, especially our

elders.”

The project consists of 25 duplex units spread over a 12-acre lot. Elders will

have an option of one or two-bedroom units. The development will include a

community building, a playground, sidewalks, decorative area lighting and

attractive landscaping. Once complete, our elders will also enjoy a covered

picnic area, gazebo, outdoor seating areas and a computer center.

Pembroke Senior Village is conveniently located near a shopping center,

pharmacy, grocery store and a recreation complex.

The tribe broke ground on the project in mid-October 2014.
