Congratulations to all of the athletes who participated in the Special Olympics 2023 Games today at UNC Pembroke. Thank you to all of the volunteers who made today special for the athletes. More than 200 athletes were on hand to compete at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. This is the first time the event has been held since the COVID-19 Pandemic. Also thank you to the Harpers Ferry Baptist Church Brotherhood for awarding and cheering on all of the athletes today. All of the athletes are winners.

- Southeast Native Studies Conference Begins at UNC Pembroke
The Eighteenth Annual Southeast Native Studies Conference opened the first day today at UNC Pembroke. Tribal Chairman Lowery brought the greetings this morning and welcomed the participants. He encouraged the researchers to study and tell about Lumbee History especially during times such as when the Lumbee Tribe was federally recognized during the era of Indian Termination as well as contemporary stories of the foundation and beginnings of the current government. The conference has researchers, students and participants from throughout the Southeast. The presentation topics look at Native Literature to environment issues. The purpose of the Southeast Native Studies Conference is to provide a forum for discussion of the cultures, history, art, health, and contemporary issues of American Indians in the Southeast. The conference serves as a critical venue for scholars, students and all persons interested in American Indian Studies in the region. The conference continues through Friday at Old Main.

The Rehabilitation Program accepts applications for new contractors twice a year ONLY. Any American Indian contractor who would like to place their name/business on the Qualified Bidders List for the Lumbee Tribe Rehabilitation Housing Program must submit an application by mail or by the drop off box at the Tribal Housing Complex located at 6984 NC 711 in Pembroke, NC 28372. - Chairman Lowery welcomed home Randy Brown, NFL Football Kicking Coach for the Baltimore Ravens
Today, the Lumbee Tribe and Chairman Lowery welcomed home Randy Brown as he dropped by the Lumbee Tribal Housing Complex to complete his enrollment. Brown is a Special Teams Coach for the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. He also spent 12 years as the mayor of Evesham Township in New Jersey. Randy visited today with his first cousin Pamela Dimery. They are the grandchildren of Preacher Zimmie Chavis of the Bear Swamp / St. Annah Community. Randy's grandmother Edith is Preacher Zimmie's daughter.

Congratulations to all of our Lumbee award winners who received awards, scholarships or recognition at the United Tribes of North Carolina 2023 Unity Conference this weekend. Mr. Dwayne Hunt was the Lumbee Veteran recognized for military service. He served in the United States Army - Sergeant First Class in Afghanistan . Congratulations to Dr. Jo Ann Chavis Lowery who was recognized with the United Tribes Distinguished Service to the Indian Community Award as well as Kaylee Chavis who received the Distinguished American Indian High School award. A number of our Lumbee students also receive scholarships which included Natalie Evington, Hallie Scott, Ava Jacobs, Kaylee Chavis, Lahna Sampson, Jayla Locklear, Jayda Smith, Nathanaeal Jones, Hannah Locklear, Brice Chavis, Katerina Lesane, Kelly Locklear and Ayden Sky Bullard. Congratulations to children and staff who submitted their artwork during the art show. We also had a number of Lumbee Tribal staff that participated in panels as well as presentations on housing.
