- Coach Kelvin Sampson Recognized for Service to Community with Eagle Feather and Lumbee Warriors Pin
Congratulations to Houston Head Basketball Coach and Lumbee Tribal Member Kelvin Sampson, who was recognized today in his hometown of Pembroke. Coach Sampson was on the UNC Pembroke campus today as the Key Note Speaker for the UNC System Board of Governors luncheon meeting today. UNCP is hosting the Board of Governors on campus for their two-day meeting. This is the first time UNC Pembroke has hosted the meeting since 2013. UNC Pembroke Chancellor Robin Cummings presented Coach Sampson with a beaded Eagle Feather; "In recognition of his extraordinary and lasting impact as a mentor and role model for young men, his ardent belief in the power of education and his unwavering support of his hometown community, the Lumbee Tribe and The University of North Carolina at Pembroke." Following the meeting, Coach Sampson took time to visit with students, staff and community members in the University Center. During that visit, the Lumbee Warriors Association presented Coach Sampson with a Lumbee Warriors Pin in recognition of his accomplishments and service.
- Bible Drill Students Receive a Standing Ovation Following Presentation to Lumbee Tribal Council
Bible Drill participants from the Burnt Swamp Baptist Association received a standing ovation for their Bible knowledge during a Bible Drill and Public Speaking Demonstration at the Lumbee Tribal Council April Business meeting tonight. Three students shared their speeches, while the other students showed off their knowledge of the Bible by finding verses or Bible chapters in just seconds. There are four levels of Bible drill competition. These Burnt Swamp Baptist Association students have already competed at their churches. Three of the drillers will go to the state level. One of the public speakers is on the way to the state competition. The other two public speakers will compete this Saturday to determine if they will proceed to the state finalist drill. The ones that win at the state level or best of the best win a $2500 scholarship and will go on to the national championship in Dallas Texas. Robeson and Hoke County have had several Bible drillers who won the state competition, competed at the nationals and at least one to win the national level, who was Taylor Oxendine. Thank you to all of our members from our Lumbee Tribe Boys & Girls Club’s as well as staff members who participated in the the Indigenous Art Festival at the North Carolina Museum of Art today. The event included art demonstrations, drumming and dance, museum tours, Native Vendors, panel discussion of Native art and much more. #GoodMedicine

Congratulations to Bobby and Rhonda Oxendine who received $10,000 through the Lumbee Tribe Down Payment Assistance program today. The couple plans to follow their dreams as homeowners with a new home in the Maxton community. They are some of the newest Lumbee Tribal members to received the increased down payment assistance after Chairman John L. Lowery amended the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina’s Down Payment Assistance Policy last month.

This afternoon, Chairman John Lowery had an opportunity to spotlight our Tribal Housing program during a tour with Lumbee Tribal Elder and business leader Jim Thomas. Thomas stopped by to visit with Chairman Lowery and tour the tribal headquarters while he was in town.

Please join the Lumbee Tribe of N.C. for a day of fellowship and cultural sharing on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 with the N.C. General Assembly in Raleigh. The event is from 10 am till 2 pm at the Bicentennial Plaza between the N.C. Museum of History and the N.C. Museum of Science at 1 E. Edenton St. Raleigh, NC 27601. The event is open to the public.
- District 9 Community Meeting Gives Saddletree Community Overview of Lumbee Programs
Thank you to everyone that attended the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina’s District 9 Community Meeting at Four Winds Boys & Girls Club in the Saddletree Community this evening. The event was hosted by Councilman Dewey McNeill. The Lumbee Tribe's Administration and Staff provided an information session on tribal services as well as community information, detailing each service and program that is currently being offered, the application processes, as well as the eligibility requirements. The staff discussed the LIHEAP program that will soon open, the new construction of elder communities, as well as Vocational Rehabilitation that helps individuals with disabilities. The Lumbee Tribe of N.C. wishes one of our own safe travels as she prepares to deploy oversees to protect freedom. 24-year-old Sgt. Francesca Brice stopped by the Lumbee Tribe Housing Complex to visit with Chairman Lowery on Monday before her first oversees deployment in the Army. Francesca is from the Red Springs community. She leaves for Saudi Arabia tomorrow. Francesca's mother is Josephine Oxendine from the Shannon community. Her grandparents are Joseph Connelly Oxendine from Pembroke and Ola Mae Locklear from Shannon. We pray God’s protection around Francesca and her family during her deployment.
- Lumbee Cultural Workshop Series Participants Dance, Drum and Make Pinecone Patchwork
Thank you to everyone who came out to the Lumbee Cultural Workshop Series on Monday. It was a good time of fellowship and cultural sharing. Thank you to Lumbee Artist Hayes Allen Locklear for sharing of his Pinecone Patchwork knowledge, while teaching participants how to make a Pinecone Patchwork ornament. Thank you parents for bringing out your children to learn about Lumbee Culture. If you were unable to make this workshop, we are planning to host a similar Pinecone Patchwork workshop in the fall. Also thank you to parents who brought food to bless everyone. These workshops are held every Monday of each month (excluding holidays). They are open to all ages and are free. Each month will focus on a new topic / skill. Registration is not required for the dancing and drumming workshop. The location for the series next Monday will be at the Pembroke Boys & Girls Club on Highway 711 in Pembroke. It is located behind the Lumbee Tribal Housing Complex.

Applications are now available for the Lumbee Tribal Scholarship Award 2023. The deadline to apply is May 19th, 2023. 1. The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina will be awarding scholarships to current college students enrolled for next semester and entering freshman. Applications will be competitive. Scholarships will be awarded to students attending a technical, two or four-year college, or university. 2. Professional individuals in the field of education will weigh academic achievement, grade point average (minimum of 2.5), Native American cultural involvement, career plans, extracurricular activities, community involvement, and your essay for the award. 3. Applications must be received between April 13th through May 19th 2023. 4. Applications will be accepted by mail or you may bring the completed application to the Tribal Complex in a sealed envelopment. Applications MUST be accompanied with an official transcript signed by a guidance counselor in a sealed envelope and postmarked no later than May 19th, 2023. Official transcripts may also be sent via e-transcripts to lsweat@lumbeetribe.com on or before the deadline date of May 19th, 2023. - April Cultural Workshop Series features Hayes Allen Locklear
Everyone is invited to the monthly Lumbee Tribe of N.C. Cultural Workshop Series. Next Monday's workshop will include a new workshop series on Pinecone Patchwork Ornaments with Hayes Allen Locklear. There will also be Powwow dancing and drumming. The location for the series will be at the Pembroke Boys & Girls Club on Highway 711 in Pembroke. It is located behind the Lumbee Tribal Housing Complex. These workshops are held every Monday of each month (excluding holidays). They are open to all ages and are free. Each month will focus on a new topic / skill. Registration is now open for the Patchwork workshop (which is limited to 30 participants.) Guest may also participate in the drumming and dance workshop as well. Each workshop will be from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm.
