This new Lumbee Tribal Elders Community is located at 33 Sickle Lane in Rowland. We are celebrating the dedication of the new administrative office at the Pine Needle Elders Village.

Lumbee Tribal Chairman John L. Lowery proclaims the month of May to be Missing and Murdered Indigenous Awareness Month in the land of the Lumbee. Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples' Awareness Month - May 5, 2023 AProclamation WHEREAS, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina joins together with local, state, tribal, and national governments supporting the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women; and Wheras, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina recognizes May 5th as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women's National Day of Awareness; and Whereas, the lasting effects of colonization and a history of oppressive policies directly correlate to the rise of violence against Indigenous women and girls; and Whereas, the disappearances and murders of Indigenous people is directly connected to domestic and other forms of violence, sexual assault, trafficking, and a history of childhood, intergenerational, and historic trauma; and Whereas, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina recognizes that the issues of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People are not isolated incidents; and Whereas, Lumbee communities in our four-county Tribal Territory have shown continued resilience in the face of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People crisis; and Whereas, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina continues to advocate to our state and federal delegations for legislation and policy to address the crisis; and Whereas, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina stands together with our Native communities in solidarity against sexual violence and domestic abuse, and work to address the root causes of these persistent systemic issues and protect our relatives from further harm. NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Chairman of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, that I do hereby urge all citizens to actively participate in the scheduled activities and programs to work towards the elimination of personal and institutional violence against women and girls. BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED, that the Chairman of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina publicly recognizes Tribal Support Services, and our community partners, for the important work done by domestic violence programs and victims’ service providers, to increase awareness and thereby hopefully eliminating domestic violence and decreasing the number of missing and murders within the Tribal Territory. BE IT FINALLY PROCLAIMED, by the Chairman of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina that the month of May shall be the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Awareness Month in the land of the Lumbee.

Veterans, please mark your calendar for the Lumbee Tribe Veterans Stand Down on June 10, 2023 from 10 am till 2 pm at the Lumbee Tribe Boys & Girls Club. The event will offer a variety of resources for our Veterans including Health screenings, Mental Health Services, Food, Gear Distribution and much more. Veterans will need to present a DD-214, Veterans ID or be verified on-site. The event is in collaboration with Veterans Services of the Carolinas, NC Works and the US Department of Veteran Affairs. Thank you to everyone who came out this afternoon to remember our loved ones who were taken and bring awareness to the issue of (MMIP) Missing and Murdered Indigenous People. Dozens of people marched in the (MMIP) Missing and Murdered Indigenous People March this afternoon. The march began at the Art Market (Former Shoe Shop) in Pembroke and it ended at the Pembroke Park, which was the location of the MMIP Ceremony. The event was sponsored by the Lumbee Tribe of N.C. and Native Visions Magazine. Thank you to all the families who came out to share their stories, give a voice to their family members and support each other. Also thank you to all the program participants and Miss Lumbee, Mahlea Hunt for sharing her platform at the event.

We have received some wonderful feedback about Lumbee Day at the General Assembly on Wednesday. Thank you to everyone who came out on Wednesday. It was a beautiful day and the rain held off till we wrapped up. Here are a few images from the day. The event included music, dancing, Lumbee Artisans showcasing their work and some amazing Lumbee Food. Thank you again to Speaker Tim Moore, Representative Jarrod Lowery, UNCP Chancellor Robin Cummings, Senator Phil Berger, Senator Dan Blue, Ali Briggs, the Lumbee Ambassadors, our Lumbee Artisans and all the staff for going the extra mile to make this day extra special.

On Thursday, more than 200 Lumbee High School and College Students received a special Tribal cord during the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina Cords of Honor Ceremony. Thank you to everyone who came out to the Lumbee Cultural Workshop Series on Monday. Our participants completed their Pinecone Patchwork Ornament. Thank you to Lumbee Artist and legend Hayes Alan Locklear for sharing of his Pinecone Patchwork knowledge. It was a great time of fellowship and cultural sharing. Thank you parents for bringing out your children to learn about Lumbee Culture, to drum and dance. Our babies are having a time. If you were unable to attend this workshop, we are planning to host a similar Pinecone Patchwork workshop in the fall. Also thank you to parents who brought food to bless everyone. These workshops are held every Monday of each month (excluding holidays). They are open to all ages and are free. Each month will focus on a new topic / skill. Registration is not required for the dancing and drumming workshop.
