It’s time to Read Across America. Many schools across the nation began the reading campaign today. Lumbee Tribal Chairman Lowery kicked off the week by reading to all of the first grade classes at Deep Branch Elementary. He read 2 books and got lots of smiling looks! The Chairman felt right at home as a former educator. He encourages everyone to read every day, but especially parents read to your children.

Thank you to the Kenan Institute at UNC Chapel Hill & NCGrowth for providing one of our tribal citizens, Patrick Dial, the opportunity to showcase southern cuisine, that features his Lumbee Tribe’s heritage and family traditions. Dial prepared collard wraps, pork barbecue, chicken and pastry, noodle stew, turnip soup with cornbread dumplings, traditional southern chicken salad, as well as chocolate and red velvet cake. The event, NCGrowth’s ‘Engaging for Economic Prosperity,’ featured discussions regarding partnerships between NCGrowth, UNC Chapel Hill, Fayetteville State University, and many others. Chris Clemens, Provost and Chief Academic Officer UNC CH, and Mary Margaret Frank, Dean of the Kenan Flagler Business School, as well as FSU’s Chancellor Darrell T. Allison, and NCGrowth Executive Director Mark Gabriel Little were among those that spoke during the event.

Congratulations to Nancy Strickland Chavis and all of the featured artist in this week’s opening of the "To Take Shape and Meaning: Form and Design in Contemporary American Indian Art," exhibition at the N.C. Museum of Art. It features works by 75 Indigenous artists from over 50 tribes throughout the United States and Canada, including eight from North Carolina. This exhibition was organized by guest curator Nancy Strickland Chavis (Lumbee), Director/Curator of the Museum of the Southeast American Indian at UNC Pembroke. The N.C. Museum of Art celebrated the opening of the exhibit on Thursday night with a reception, which was attended by Native People's from across the country and tribal leaders from our sister tribes across the state. There was also a great number of our Lumbee Citizens who turned out to support this historic exhibition. Lumbee Tribal Chairman Lowery said the reception was a phenomenal event. “I’m so proud of the work that Nancy has put in to curate such a wonderful exhibit,” said Lowery. “Her vision, along with the many artist who have their works featured, make this an incredible exhibit that I encourage all Lumbee to visit.” The exhibition features, some of the most celebrated artist in Indian country. But you will also see beautiful Lumbee highlights in the exhibit. The exhibit will be on display March 2 through July 28, 2024.
