- Lumbee Tribal staff Encourages Breast Cancer Awareness
Throughout the month of October our Lumbee Tribal staff has participated in a number of activities to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Thank you to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office for bringing by the Cancer Awareness car. The vehicle is traveling across Robeson county to spread awareness about cancer awareness.
- Lumbee Tribe Welcomes State Secretary and NC Administration Leaders for Tribal Tour
On Friday, the Lumbee Tribe of N.C. welcomed Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Administration Pam Brewington Cashwell and several members of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resourcesfor a tour of Lumbee Communities, Maxton Pond, the Lumbee Tribe Cultural Center and several existing projects. NC Secretary Pam Brewington Cashwell, Greg Richardson, Reid Wilson, and Kerry Bird toured, but also had a conversation withTribal Chairman Lowery and Tribal Administration about some needs of the tribe and possible areas of collaboration.
- Chairman Lowery met with NC Gov. Roy Cooper in a government to government discussion
Today, Lumbee Tribal Chairman John Lowery met with North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper in a government to government discussion on issues that impact the Lumbee People. Chairman Lowery and Governor Cooper discussed economic development within tribal communities, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) and the impact that full federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe will have on the state. Chairman Lowery said, “I am thankful for this time with Governor Cooper. The Governor and I were able to spend this time not only discussing issues that impact the Lumbee, but all tribes across the state.” Following the meeting at the Governor’s Mansion, Chairman Lowery gifted Governor Cooper with a piece of pottery by Lumbee Artist Karl Anthony Hunt.
- Chairman Lowery honored Miss Indian North Carolina for her representation to the Lumbee Tribe
On Thursday, the Lumbee Tribal Council and Lumbee Tribal Chairman John Lowery honored Miss Indian North Carolina Jayla Locklear for her representation and dedication to the Lumbee Tribe. District 9 Tribal Councilman Dewey McNeill presented Jayla with a beaded Eagle feather on behalf of the Tribal Council. The feather was beaded by Mr. Reggie Brewer. Chairman Lowery also presented her with a beautiful pottery award. The council also honored her with a standing ovation. This year, Jayla has represented all N.C. tribes with honor and dignity. As Miss Indian NC, Jayla represents the 8 N.C. eight state and federally recognized tribes and 4 urban Indian organizations. Her platform is “Speak up & speak loud, stand up against bullying. Jayla is majoring in biology at UNC Pembroke. She hopes to attend PA or medical school. Jayla is an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe of N.C.

Thank you to everyone that attended the SBA Town Hall Meeting this morning, October 19. It was a great turnout. There were many business owners and prospective business owners in attendance. Small business owners and those interested in starting a small business had the opportunity to listen to a brief SBA presentation and a panel discussion that featured the SBA as well as its resource partners: Small Business and Technology Development Center, SCORE, Women’s Business Center, Veterans Business Outreach Center, and Robeson Community College Small Business Center. The panel discussion included a question-and-answer session. SBA Assistant Administrator for Native American Affairs Jackson Brossy and Greenville NC-based SBA Southeast Regional Administrator Allen Thomas, both, delivered remarks regarding the resources to help small businesses and startups.

Thank you to everyone for your patience and your diligence to come in early for services as we prepared to close the Lumbee Tribal Enrollment Office for the November election. Also thank you to our Enrollment Staff for all their hard work. We would also like to welcome some of our newest Lumbee Tribal members. Welcome to 3-year-old Kaleb and Karter from Cumberland County. Their mother, Savanna Hartman, brought in the identical twins early Friday to get them enrolled. She said she was enrolled at a young age and also wanted to enroll her boys at a young age. The Lumbee Tribal Rolls are mandated under Lumbee Tribal Law to close 30 days prior to any tribal election. The Tribal Rolls will re-open 30 days after certification of the tribal election.

Small business owners you are invited to the SBA Town Hall on Wednesday. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced it will hold a town hall for the Lumbee Community on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The event marks the SBA’s first, significant outreach event in Robeson County and for the Lumbee tribe. The town hall will include a brief SBA presentation and a panel discussion also featuring the SBA as well as its resource partners: Small Business and Technology Development Center, SCORE, Women’s Business Center, Veterans Business Outreach Center, and Robeson Community College Small Business Center. The panel discussion will include a question-and-answer session. The participating organizations will have resource tables which attendees may visit after the panel discussion. SBA Assistant Administrator for Native American Affairs Jackson Brossy will visit from Washington DC to deliver remarks, as will Greenville NC-based SBA Southeast Regional Administrator Allen Thomas. “We are pleased to be able to showcase our programs and services for the Lumbee community next month,” commented SBA North Carolina District Director Mike Arriola, who is based in Charlotte. “The outreach event we are planning aligns with the SBA’s commitment to ensure that our underserved communities have equitable access to capital, technical assistance, and other assistance to help them start and grow their small businesses.” Who should attend: Anyone wanting to start a small business, or run and grow an existing small business.
