  • Annual Rennert 4th of July Parade Brings Visitors from Across the Region

    It was a scorcher out today, but people from across the region visited the Town of Rennert for the annual Fourth of July parade. There were golf carts, queens, hot rods, tractors and even horses. Lumbee Tribal Chairman John L. Lowery joined in the fun. Rennert is a small town with a huge heart for Independence Day. Happy 4th of July!

    The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina along with the Museum of the Southeast American Indian is hosting the 1st Annual Indigenous Games as part of the Lumbee Homecoming festivities. Events will include Chunkey and Social Stickball. Chunkey will start at 5:30pm and Stickball at 7pm. To play you must be 18+ or 16+ with guardian permission. The event will be held at the Lumbee Tribe Boys & Girls Club in Pembroke, which is located behind the Lumbee Tribe Housing Complex.     Today was a perfect day to spend time honoring our Lumbee Elders as Lumbee Homecoming gets underway. More than 500 elders attended the Annual Elder’s Luncheon. The event is hosted by Lumbee Regional Development Association. Today our Tribal Council joined the group of tribal staff, volunteers and Lumbee pageant contestants who served our elders lunch. Chairman John Lowery shared up and coming events and details of programs for elders. Each elder received a bag of goodies. Thank you to all who made this event special for our elders. The event was held at the Southeastern Ag Center.

    For Immediate Release Lumbee Warrior Receives the Highest Award for the State of N.C. at Veterans Ball Pembroke, NC (June 26, 2023) - David G. Locklear, Master Chief, United States Navy (Retired) was presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine at the Lumbee Warriors Assocation Veterans Military Ball on Saturday. Locklear is a member of the Lumbee Warriors Association. The award was presented by Rev. Gary Deese, County commissioner John Earl Cummings, Larry Townsend, Gregory A. Richardson, Executive Director of the NC Commission of Indian Affairs and the Lumbee Warriors. Locklear served in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1994. He grew up in Pembroke. After graduating from high school, Locklear joined the United States Navy. He had a distinguished Navy career advancing to Master Chief Petty Officer. Locklear served in various sea and shore commands. During those years, his shore tours included assignments in the Philippines, Naples Italy, NATO Command in Norfolk, Virginia (2 tours), Special Ops assignment at Fort Bragg, NC, ending with his final military assignment at Navy Management Systems Support Office in Chesapeake, Virginia. Locklear is an enrolled citizen of the Lumbee Tribe. Since 1963, North Carolina’s governors have reserved their highest honor, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine award, for persons who have made significant contributions to the state and their communities through their exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments. Persons named to the Order become North Carolina “Ambassadors” with their names and award dates recorded on a Roster maintained by the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Society. Photo caption - David G.   • Chairman John L. Lowery and Travis Bryant were speakers at Pemb. Area Chamber of Commerce Meeting

    Lumbee Tribal Chairman John L. Lowery and Travis Bryant, Executive Director of Lumbee Regional Development Association were the guest speakers today at the Pembroke Area Chamber of Commerce Membership Meeting. The meeting was held at the Lumbee Tribe Boys & Girls Club. Chairman Lowery discussed housing growth that would be visible in the Pembroke area over the next 2-3 years on Candy Park Lane and collaborations with the Town of Pembroke. He also discussed the Cultural Center expansion with new basketball goals, development of a volleyball court, amphitheater renovations with new stadium seating and the projected fishing date for the Cultural Center Lake. He also stressed the importance of how the Lumbee Tribe Cultural Center is steadily becoming more of a tourist attraction and destination for our people. Travis Bryant discussed homecoming events which are coming up over the next two weeks. He shared that this year, the event lineup is expanded and will also include a wing competition and partnerships with local businesses. The Pembroke Area Chamber of Commerce and the Pembroke Chamber Foundation also presented 4 scholarships to Robeson County High School Seniors.

    Thank you for everyone who came out on Thursday to the District 12 Community Meeting at Gray Pond Baptist in Laurinburg, NC. The meeting was hosted by Tribal Council members Josephine Doss and Annie Taylor. Participants had an opportunity to see designs by our Lumbee Elders, hear details about Lumbee Tribal Services Information and have a great meal.

    Thank you to Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) for your continued support of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. Representatives from BCBS, recently toured the Lumbee Tribal Housing Complex and met with tribal administrators. During the meeting, BCBS representatives were able to discuss with Mrs. Tammy Maynor, Director of Governmental Affairs, specific health needs of the Lumbee Tribe. BCBS has funded multiple projects for the Lumbee Tribe. BCBS representatives also discussed ways to collaborate to address health equity and how to expand our relationship to provide services to Lumbee Tribal members.

This is the second ground breaking for the Lumbee Tribe this month.
