  • The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, and KaBOOM! Put Ki

Over 200 volunteers from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and the community joined KaBOOM! yesterday, Wednesday, April 24 to build a kid-designed, state-of-the-art playground in just six hours at the Lumbee Tribe Cultural Center. The build started around 10:00AM and was completed about 4:00PM. This new playground will help make play the easy choice for kids and families in Robeson County. Play is essential to physical, creative, cognitive, social and emotional development. This new and improved playground at the Lumbee Tribe Cultural Center will provide a safe and enhanced play space to promote inclusivity for kids with varying needs and abilities in Robeson County. In February, kids from the surrounding community came together to draw their dream playground. The playground is based off their drawings and will provide thousands of kids in Robeson County with a great, safe place to play over its lifetime. This playground is part of a broader effort led by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and KaBOOM! to ensure communities have great PLAYces for kids and families. It will be the 12th build by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina; and this area was selected to help benefit a community impacted by Hurricane Florence in September 2018 in hopes of restoring normalcy through play for kids and families still impacted by the storm. The Lumbee Tribe of NC would like to give special thanks to community members, staff from the Lumbee Tribe, volunteers from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, KaBoom!, UNC-Pembroke's Community and Civic Engagement Office, Big Boys Kitchen, District 4 County Commissioner Faline Dial, Pembroke Waste Collections Inc., Robeson Health Care Corporations, Wal-Mart, Frederick Quick with SBS Bouncers, Dreamland Rentals, and South Scotland Elementary School staff and students.
