- Thanksgiving Dinner at Ft. Bragg with Gov. Cooper and Pres. Biden
Lumbee Tribal Member Chief Warrant Office 3 Rocky Sampson and other soldiers at Ft. Bragg had a special early Thanksgiving dinner this evening as Governor Roy Cooper and First Lady Kristin Cooper joined President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden as they thanked service members and their families for their sacrifice and service.
- Annual Clean-Up Croatan Indian Memorial Cemetery 2021
Almost 100 people traveled to Adabelle, Bulloch County, Georgia this weekend for the annual journey to clean the Croatan Indian Memorial Cemetery. Ancestors of the Lumbee traveled to this Georgia Community for work as they followed the turpentine industry in the late 1800's and into the early 1900’s. This weekend was the largest clean-up group to make the trip. The attendees included local citizens, a large delegation from the Saddletree community. Some traveled from several cities including Atlanta, Jessup, New York, Baltimore, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Fayetteville as well as coastal cities, and throughout Robeson County. There are around 35 graves in the Croatan cemetery. Our ancestors also established a church and a school during their time in Southeast Georgia.
- Governor Roy Cooper hosted the Governor’s Round Table with State-Recognized Tribes
This week, offered a great opportunity to look at issues affecting Native People in North Carolina as Governor Roy Cooper hosted the Governor’s Round Table with State-Recognized Tribes. We say Thank you to Governor Cooper for including us in budget. State-recognized Tribes will receive $10 million dollars. We are thankful to him for opening doors for true inclusion to have the Lumbee Tribe of N.C. recognized at Ft. Fisher. Also, Thank you to Michelle Lanier for initiating the opportunity of true inclusion at Ft. Fisher.

Congratulations to the winners of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina Creative Writing Competition and Art Competition. This video is a glimpse into the passion they put behind their artwork and writing pieces. The award winners were announced Thursday at the Lumbee Tribal Council Meeting. The theme of the Creative Writing Competition was “I am important”. The Creative Writing Winners are: Camryn Gray Clark - 5th Grade Hayle Ann Locklear - 7th Grade Morgyn Skye Clay - 10th Grade Each winner will receive $50.00 each. The theme for the Art Competition was Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women MMIW The winners are: Camryn Gray Clark - 5th grade - $50.00 Kendyll Zoe-Lee Clay - 5th grade - $30.00 Overall Winner: Keely Renee Oxendine - 12th grade - $120.00 First Runner up: Jordyn Paige Lowery - 12th grade – $70.00 Second Runner up: Savannah Nicole Clay - 9th grade - $30.00 Third Runner up: Anileigh Rose Locklear - 9th grade - $25.00 Fourth Runner up: Jaylen Blayze Jacobs - 9th grade - $20.00 Fifth Runner up: Morgan Skye Clay - 10th grade - $5.00
- Walking Through History Tour Turn Out at Fort Fisher State Historic Site
Thank you to everyone who turned out today for the tour at Fort Fisher State Historic Site. Lumbee Tribal Chairman Harvey Godwin, Jr. and Nancy Fields, Director of the Museum of the Southeast American Indian hosted a walking tour as they explored the history of our ancestors who endured conscription at Fort Fisher. The Walking Through History Tour looked at the struggles Lumbee men and their families faced as they labored against their will at the fort. The Lumbee as well as other Indian people left lasting marks on the history of Fort Fisher and the legacy of the Civil War. Following the Walking Tour Chairman Godwin and Mrs. Fields participated in a Virtual Presentation as part of the American Indian Heritage Celebration by the N.C. Museum of History. Thank you to the staff at Fort Fisher State Historic Site, UNC Pembroke, Chancellor Robin Cummings, Michelle Lanier, the NC Museum of History, our Tribal Staff and everyone who made this event a great success.

On the land where history happened, join Lumbee Tribal Chairman Harvey Godwin, Jr. and Nancy Fields, Director of the Museum of the Southeast American Indian for a walking tour as they explore the history of Lumbee conscription at Fort Fisher. The tour will discuss the struggles Lumbee men and their families faced as they labored against their will at the fort. Both events are Saturday, November 20, 2021 beginning at 11:00 am with the Walking Tour and then at 2:00 pm is the Virtual Presentation. - Lumbee Tribe Cultural Day with Seymour Johnson Air Force Base
Thursday was an exciting day as we had an opportunity to share our Lumbee Culture with airmen from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. The Lumbee Tribe of N.C. and UNC Pembroke hosted a Culture Day for the airmen. It is one of the many activities throughout American Indian Heritage Month. Thursday afternoon, the airmen participated in a cultural program featuring a variety of Lumbee Cultural activities including dance, songs, traditional foods,storytelling as well as demonstrations of weapons, stick ball, basket making, and much more. Thank you to all of our presenters, our Lumbee Culture Team, the Lumbee Ambassadors, Miss Indian North Carolina, as well as former Ambassadors who came out to share with the airmen. Also thank you to Colonel Tammy Mcelhaney for allowing us to share about the Lumbee People.
