  • Condolences to the family of Mrs. Madie Rae Locklear

The Lumbee Tribe of N.C. sends our deepest condolences to the family of Mrs. Madie Rae Locklear. Mrs. Madie Rae will be remembered across our tribal community and region as a leader and tireless champion to those in need. Madie Rae Anderson Locklear was escorted home to her Heavenly Father by a glorious choir of Angels on Feb. 2, 2022. She was born on Nov. 18th, 1945, to the late Rudolph and Dora Lee Wilkins Anderson. The funeral service will be conducted at noon Saturday at New Prospect Holiness Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, William "June" Locklear; an infant son, William Calley; her parents; a sister, Annie Sue Anderson; and brothers, Charles Anderson, and Jimmy Ray Anderson. Madie had a servant's heart and through her kind acts and words, she put others needs before her own. Her legacy will remain in the hearts and minds of everyone she interacted with as well as those she reached but never met. The people she touched were legion, spanning almost five decades and many states. She heartened countless lives both personally and professionally with her spirit of strength, dedication and compassion. She had numerous accomplishments and served leadership roles in both business and community. Her career of 47 years began with Tri County Services which later became Four County Community Services. She was the first elected female to serve on the Lumbee River Electrical Membership Corporation board of directors in 1989, which she honorably served for 32 years. She was also the first female to serve as chairwoman of LREMC. Through this role she applied her qualities of passion and vision to serve the interests and pursue the goals of LREMC as well as the members. She was an independent and strong-minded woman who always encouraged women empowerment and was a pioneer for many. Madie always carried herself with a sense of purpose, dignity and style. She was known for her strong faith and witness to others. She used each day as an opportunity to share the saving grace of Jesus with those whose path she crossed. Her generosity was shown through her involvement in a number of charitable foundations and many church missions. She and her husband were extraordinarily proud of their family and delighted in raising two adoring daughters. She taught her family the importance of faith, perseverance and celebrating the beauty of life. She was always a bright light in any room she entered and taught her daughters and granddaughters the importance of strength and self-confidence. The laughs shared as a family cannot be counted, but they are ingrained in the memory of her loved ones. Madie is survived by her daughter, Selena Drakos (Nick) of Fayetteville, and their daughter, Maria Drakos, of Wilmington; daughter, Sophia L. Oxendine (Pastor Horace) of Prospect Community, and their daughter, Lauren Simmons (Dan) of St. Pauls; three great-grandchildren, Kinsley, Makenna and Daxon Simmons; great-grandpuppy, Bindi Drakos of Wilmington; sisters, Doretta Clark, Jeanette Clark, Judy Dial (Clayton), Cattie Locklear (Stephen), and Barbara Williams (Todd); a brother, Pastor Wayland (Daphne); sisters-in-law, Darlene Anderson ,and Hazel Locklear of Maxton; brothers-in-law, Sgt.
