HISTORY
The Lumbee are an amalgamation of peoples from various woodland and coastal tribes, such as the Keyauwee, Cheraw, Hatteras, and Tuscarora. These peoples and others from the Eastern Siouan, Algonquin, and Iroquoian tribal language families coalesced to form an intertribal community around the Lumbee River Basin. We are currently the largest tribe east of the Mississippi.
