This Lumbee Homecoming saw a revival of competitive ancient games within the Lumbee Tribal Territory. On Saturday, Lumbee Homecoming participants had an opportunity to see the first time that the game of Chunkey was played here competitively in more than 400 years. The game was part of the 1st Annual Indigenous Games, which were hosted by the Lumbee Tribe of N.C. along with the Museum of the Southeast American Indian. Even with a down pour of rain, tribal members from the Haliwa-Saponi, Navajo, Waccamaw Siouan, Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Shawnee and the Lumbee Tribe played competitive games of Chunkey and Social Stickball on Lumbee Field at UNC Pembroke. These are traditional Indigenous Southeast games. The players ranged in age from young children to adults.

It was a wonderful week to celebrate our Tribal Heritage and visit with our families who were home from across the globe. On Saturday, the celebration was winding down, but not before an exciting parade, powwow, arts and crafts, some more great food, the swearing in of Senior Ms. Lumbee Edith Jones, games, antique cars, the Lumbee film festival, fireworks and much more.

During the Lumbee Tribe’s State of the Tribe Address Chairman John L Lowery discussed the expanded tribal budget, but he also looked at legislation that is important to the Lumbee Tribe and also key partnerships which are making a difference for the Lumbee people. These are just a few of highlights that were shared with a Lumbee Citizen’s on Thursday night. Thank you to everyone who attended the Lumbee Tribe of N.C. State of the Tribe Address. Chairman Lowery also honored former First Lady Diane Goins with an Eagle feather for her contributions to the Lumbee People and her community. Mrs. Diane is the widow of former Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins. She wears many hats, but is probably best remembered for her role as an elementary school teacher.

Today the Lumbee Warriors Association honored Congressman David Rouzer with a Lumbee Warriors pin and a Warriors patch. The Lumbee Warriors Members read the significance of what each pin means. Rouzer is the U.S. representative for North Carolina's 7th congressional district. The Lumbee Warriors also encouraged U.S. Representative Rouzer to support veterans and military issues on Capitol Hill.
