This week, Lumbee Tribal Chairman Lowery joined UNC Pembroke to welcome Rick West to the university campus and the Museum of the Southeast American Indian. West is the founding director of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in Washington, D.C. and New York City. He will be the new elder in residence at UNC-Chapel Hill at the American Indian Heritage Center. In addition to his career at NMAI, he is an acclaimed scholar and accomplished Indian Law attorney. West toured the Museum of the Southeast American Indian. One of the extra special moments was the wonderful stories and conversation about our very own Helen Maynor Scheirbeck, who advocated for the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian and later served as the Director of Public Programs. Nancy Strickland Chavis, Director/Curator and Lecturer, hosted the visit.

Commission of Indian Affairs, on her selection as one of the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development 2024 Class of Native American 40 Under 40 Award Winners!!! Nominated by members of their communities, this prestigious award is bestowed upon American Indians (including Canadian First Nations), Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians who are under the age of 40 and have demonstrated leadership, initiative, and dedication while making significant contributions in their professions and communities. This year’s class includes an Oscar nominee, a White House advisor, tribal government and business leaders, attorneys, a journalist, and several working in Native American food and agriculture. Candace is a citizen of the Lumbee Tribe of N.C. Thank you to the parents and students who attended the Bureau of Diplomatic Security (DS) Educational and job opportunities event on Sunday. The students received great information on scholarships, fellowship opportunities, study abroad, exchange programs, virtual and paid internships, DS Drone Defender C-UAS/HoloLens Armored Car information. They also were able to go inside the Mobile Tactical Operations Command Center. The families also had an opportunity to meet Gentry O. Smith, Assistant Secretary of State for Diplomatic Security, Lumbee Tribal Citizen Cassondra Searight and staff members and agents working in the field. Cassondra is from the Prospect Community. In 2021, she was named the first fulltime permanent Diversity and Inclusion Officer in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security Service.

On April 25, 2024, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina will honor all Lumbee High School and College Students, who are potential 2024 graduates in the Lumbee Cords of Honor Ceremony. Applications are now being accepted for graduates to apply. These cords represent this important milestone in the life of our Lumbee Students. The cords comprise the colors of the Lumbee Tribal Seal and the Medicine Wheel. This symbolism represents the four directions, four seasons, as well as our sacred path in life. The application is available for download here and once completed, you may upload the application to a google form at https://forms.gle/DbwMB7Esjb2jmaPS8 The application must be fully completed, signed by a school counselor or college advisor, and returned by April 5, 2024 by 5:00 pm to the Lumbee Tribe of N.C. Applications are now available for the Senior Ms. Lumbee Pageant. The pageant will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024 at 6:30 pm at Givens Performing Arts Center on the campus of UNC Pembroke. Interested applicants may pick up applications at the front desk at the Lumbee Tribe Housing Complex on Highway 711 or at the Vocational Rehab Department behind the Housing Complex.
