Thank you to everyone that attended the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina’s District 8 Community Meeting hosted by Councilwoman Kathy Hunt at the Union Chapel Community Baptist Church. Thank you Duane and Leslie Locklear for sharing about the dangers of fentanyl. Fentanyl is the number 1 killer of Lumbees under the age of 45. Fentanyl kills more than car wrecks and suicides. They encouraged everyone to keep a dose of Naloxone on hand at all times because you never know when someone may need it to save a life. Lumbee Tribal staff provided key information regarding the services and programs offered to Lumbee Tribal members. The Energry Department’s presentation included a discussion about CIP, Crisis Intervention Program. CIP provides individuals that have experienced a sudden crisis with financial assistance. The Energy Department has replaced windows, doors, and HVAC systems in 62 tribal members' homes through their Weatherization Program. The Enrollment Department is OPEN until 8 pm on Mondays. The Homeownership Program is currently offering tribal members that qualify the opportunity to own and build their first home with 1% interest. 17 homes are anticipated to be built through the homeownership program. They also discussed the renovations occurring at the Cultural Center (including the 720 chairs that will be placed at the amphitheater) as well as the creation of the Agriculture & Natural Resources (ANR) and Health & Human Services Departments. The ANR Department has written an environmental plan to help keep our tribal members safe. Jacey Jacobs will represent our Lumbee People at the Atlanta Braves’ third-annual Native American All-Star Baseball Showcase at Truist Park. He is one of 50 Native American players selected from around the country to participate in a pro-style workout on Saturday, June 8, and a showcase game on Sunday, June 9. We are so proud of him! Jacey is a rising 12th grader at Purnell Swett High School. He is the catcher for the Rams Baseball Team. He was All-Conference Honorable Mention and All-County Team for the 2023-2024 Athletic School Year. He is the son of Camera Brewer Jacobs and Jason Jacobs. Congratulations Jacey! Your nation is cheering you on!!!

The Annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women/People (MMIW/P) March and Ceremony which was scheduled for May is rescheduled for Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 6:30 pm. The march lineup begins at 6:00 pm at Thomas Entrepreneurship Hub at 202 Main Street. The program begins at 7:00 pm at Milton R. Hunt Memorial Park in Pembroke, N.C. The event is sponsored by the Lumbee Tribe of N.C. and Native Visions Magazine. The mission of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women/People (MMIW/P) is to spread awareness of Indigenous women/people that have been murdered or have gone missing across the United States. Along with acknowledging murdered and missing Indigenous women/people, there is a push to provide support to the families of the victims and encourage tribal communities to come together to take a stand in support of protecting our women. Thank you to the Native Members of the UNCP Women's Softball Team for standing in solidarity with the MMIW movement.

Join us on Sunday, June 2, 2024 from 4 pm till 8 pm at the Lumbee Tribe Cultural Center on Terry Sanford Drive in Maxton. The event is free. The Sound-Off Begins at 5:30 pm. Plan for a 50/50 raffle. Participants may also purchase lunch and a commemorative photo, official Lumbee Tribe apparel for purchase, Sound-Off competition, Corn Hole Games and a cultural presentation.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the District 5 Annual Prospect Community Day. The event was hosted by Tribal Council members Wendy Moore and Carrington Locklear and cohosted by the Prospect Community Church, Prospect Volunteer Fire Department and Commissioner Faline Locklear Dial. Participants had an opportunity to learn about Tribal Service Information, and receive Health Checks. There was also activities for children and some amazing gospel singing, food and a great variety of vendors.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the District 7 Community Meeting on Thursday at the Pembroke Boys & Girls Club. The event was hosted by Councilwoman Yvonne Dial. The meeting was very informational about tribal services, up and coming construction plans, the new tribal district maps as well as community information.
