In preparation for the 2016-2017 school year, 600 tribal youth received backpacks filled with school supplies. This year’s distribution is the largest yet. The back-to-school project benefited residents of the tribe’s rental housing program and members of the seven Boys and Girls Clubs operated by the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.
Backpacks were distributed during the annual Youth Powwow at the Pembroke Boys and Girls Club on August 12. The annual powwow promotes returning to school with an afternoon of cultural enrichment for tribal youth between the ages of 6 to 18.
The back-to-school project, first established in 2010, is in its 7th year benefiting tribal youth throughout Cumberland, Hoke, Robeson, and Scotland counties. To date, over 1,000 tribal youth have benefited from the project. Our goal is to ensure tribal youth have the basic necessities to be successful in school.
