Lumbee Tribe hosts Robeson Technical Works Meeting

Robeson Technical Works held their meeting at the Lumbee Tribe on Thursday, September 22nd. Topics of discussion included Project ACCESS, Robeson County’s unemployment rate, and incentives for students to achieve high school graduation and higher education. Robeson Technical Works represents a partnership that is between local business entrepreneurs, industrial employers, Southeastern Human Resources Association, educators and other various group representatives. Tribal Chairman Harvey Godwin Jr. expressed the need for community partners in getting students and community more involved in higher education and employment opportunities. Project ACCESS Community Camp

On Thursday evening, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Robeson Community College, and the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina partnered to kick off the first Community Camp for Project ACCESS. In attendance were students, educators, tribal staff, and community members. The purpose of the Community Camps is to gain feedback from the community about improving access to higher education and career preparedness, as well as address these topics through presentations and talking circles. 16th Annual Saddletree Powwow brings Unity for Community

On Saturday, Lumbee Tribal Chairman Harvey Godwin Jr., joined forces with Warpaint at the 16th Annual Saddletree Powwow. The beating of the drum stirred encouragement for those in attendance to participate in the friendship dance. “Culture is community and when we come together around the drum in unity, peace, and love we promote just that,” Godwin stated. “Events such as the Saddletree Powwow help to provide sustainability among our communities and culture and with that I am proud to be in attendance.” Warpaint is a drum group that was established in the summer of 2013 to showcase southeastern talent, as well as, community, cultural involvement and sobriety. Southern Spirit Elders Present Quilt to Lumbee Tribe

Southern Spirit Elders presented a full sized quilt to Chairman Harvey Godwin Jr. on Monday. The quilt, which is titled “Southern Spirit Quilt’, will be displayed for the month of September at the Lumbee Tribal Complex located at 6984 N.C. 711 in Pembroke. This quilt was hand stitched and crafted by members of the Southern Spirit Elders Group located in the Rowland Community. The group meets every Wednesday at 9 a.m. It takes approximately six weeks to make a quilt of this size. The quilt features unique patterns that are accented with distinguishing florescent designs that allow the quilt to have a distinctive and refined presence.
