The passing of Mrs. Bertha Daniel Richardson

Tribal Chairman Harvey Godwin issued the following statement on the passing of Mrs. Bertha Daniel Richardson, the mother of Gregory A. Richardson, Executive Director of the North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs. Mrs. Richardson passed away Saturday. She was a well-respected tribal elder in the Haliwa-Saponi tribal community of Hollister, N.C. She was the wife of the late Chief Jessie W. Richardson of the Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe. “Her wisdom enlightened and touched so many of our hearts and minds,” Godwin said. “It was an honor to have known such a great person with such a strong impact and roots within our tribal communities. The passing of Mr. Bruce Barton

Lumbee Tribal Chairman Harvey Godwin released the following statement about the passing of Mr. Bruce Barton, a retired educator, journalist and historian who passed Saturday. “On behalf of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, I offer my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Bruce Barton,” Godwin said. “He was a Lumbee icon as well as an educator and mentor to many. Bruce is probably known best for his work as a journalist and founder of the Carolina Indian Voice newspaper. But, he was a man of many skills who always advocated for the advancement of Indian people. Our tribe was fortunate to have been blessed with a man with such passion for his people.”

Public Hearing

There will be a public hearing on the Lumbee tribal chairman’s proposed $19.2 million annual budget at 10 a.m. Friday at the Lumbee Tribal Complex at 6984 N.C. 711. Tribal Chairman Harvey Godwin released the proposed 2016-2017 budget at his annual State of the Tribe address July 1 at the Pembroke Boy’s and Girl’s club. State of the Tribe Address

In accordance to the Tribal Consitution, Chairman Godwin delivered his annual State of the Tribe address today detailing his proposed 2017 budget and multi-year strategic plan.
