Traditional Seeds
Beginning / Purpose
The Indigenous People of Central N.C. present the first
tribal tobacco initiative serving Hoke, Robeson, and Scotland Counties.
The Lumbee Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Project (LTPCP) is designed
to enhance and increase awareness of the health risks and diseases related
to tobacco use.
Unbreakable Roots
Youth Leaders / Partners
The LTPCP will serve American Indian youth in Hoke, Robeson,
and Scotland counties through Traditional Events. Tribal youth will serve
as key leaders in the development of materials through partnerships with
the Lumbee Tribe. The Public Schools of Robeson Countys Office of
Indian Education will provide peer trainers from each of the six high
schools who will develop presentations and assist in developing culturally
sensitive tobacco literature. The Native American Youth Council (NAYC)
will serve as a partner. NAYC are local youth serving as advocates for
youth services who will conduct bi-weekly culture classes.
Ceremonial Leaves
Goals / Objectives
Tobacco addiction rates of American Indian and Alaskan
Natives are the highest among all populations. The LTPCP will train youth
to initiate policy change, create tobacco free events, and re-introduce
the traditional and medicinal uses of tobacco.
Exchanging of Tobacco Ties
Positive Outcomes-Youth / Communities
The LTPCP honors tribal youth as visionaries and change
agents. Tribal youth will combat tobacco addiction and honor traditional
teachings of our medicinal plant - Tobacco.
Cessation and Prevention classes will be offered for
both youth and adults. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming
a Peer Trainer, please
contact April Whittemore at 910-522-2220 or awhittemore@lumbeetribe.com.
