"Dance of the Spring Moon" 2011 Lumbee Tribe Spring Powwow Head Staff

Scheduled Specials:

Biggest of the Big Boys $2,500 (Eastern War vs. Men's Northern Traditional)

Open to Men Northern Traditional and Men's Eastern Traditional registered to compete during the powwow and over the age 25 at the time of competition. This special is being hosted by the Powwow Committee in honor of Wanda K. Locklear who would always, no matter the situation would stop to watch "the big boys" in Northern Traditional and Eastern Traditional compete. This special will be judged by friends and family of Wanda K. who share her love of the energy and fierce competition , and on the final powwow day will crown the "Biggest of the Big Boys"! Dancers maybe required to dance multiple songs at the discretion of the judges. In order to place participate must be a registered powwow dancer and have/be able to show proof of Tribal affiliation

This special is being hosted by the Powwow Committee to showcase our elders who still carry the torch and who sometimes can still upstage the younger dancers and wow the crowds. This year we are honoring the late Ray Littleturtle who was known in powwow circles as a great MC and an advocate for the Lumbee Tribe and all natives. Open to participates registered to compete during the powwow and who are over the age 55 at the time of competition. All categories will dance together, this is a catch all special. Dancers maybe required to dance multiple songs at the discretion of the Head Judge. Once again, in order to place, participate must be a registered powwow dancer and have/be able to show proof of Tribal affiliation.

3+ Man Hand Drum Jam ~$500

This special is being hosted by the Powwow Committee. Open to participates registered to compete during the powwow, no age restrictions. In order to place participate must be a registered powwow participate and have/be able to show proof of Tribal affiliation.


Dial Family Grass Special 6 places

This special is being hosted by the Dial Family. Details provided at time of dancer registration.

 

Dancer Rules

  1. Registration for all categories will open Friday 5 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. Registration will close at Noon on Saturday.
  2. Contestants may enter in only one category and once registered, cannot switch categories.
  3. Contestants must have full dance regalia to compete. The contestant's regalia must be suitable and appropriate for the division in which they compete.
  4. Contestants must have tribal affiliation and Tribal ID may be requested.
  5. If any major part of a contestant's regalia falls or is dropped during a dance contest, (s)he will be disqualified voluntarily or by the Judges and Arena Director. Dyed hackles or plumes are not considered a major part of the regalia.
  6. Each contestant must wear the number issued by the registrar for their contest category. Contestant's number must be visible to the people recording numbers in order to receive points during the grand entries.
  7. Contestants observed holding up the grand entry procession will not receive points for that grand entry.
  8. Contestants observed leaving the arena before flags are posted will not receive points for that grand entry.
  9. Judges will be selected by the Powwow Committee in consultation with the Arena Director and Head Judges.
  10. The contest will be on a point system.
  11. Contestants suspected of consuming alcohol/drugs or displaying inappropriate behavior will be disqualified by the Committee, Contest Judges, Head Judges, or Arena Director.
  12. By registering, you are giving the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, permission to use your photo/image as part of their public relations material.
  13. No Weapons of any kind
  14. No Vending will be allowed by non-registered vendors and NO solicitation of any kind.
  15. No Illegal Substances, weapons, or violence permitted. Powwow grounds will be patrolled by various city/county and private police during entire powwow.
  16. No bicycles or scooters or personal motorized vehicles will be permitted into the powwow grounds (This includes, but is not limited to: golf carts, ATV's motor scooters, and powered skateboards).

VENDOR INFORMATION

Vendors must have an application completed prior to setting up.

The powwow grounds will be open Thursday at 10am for vendors who can come and begin the process.

Sites are first come first serve with spaces around the powwow circle for paying applicants only.

All informational/free booths have their own area designated by the powwow grounds manager.
