The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has received confirmation from the Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission of North Carolina that a grant application has been funded under the Community and Schools Phase III Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Initiative.
This grant will underwrite programs implemented for three years at a funding rate not to exceed $285,000. The commission will provide technical support and training for the development and evaluation of the grant.
“I am excited about the addition of Cumberland County in this new grant cycle. So now all tribal members within the tribal territory have access to tobacco cessation and prevention activities offered by the Lumbee Tribe.” states April Whittemore, Tobacco Cessation Coordinator.
Tribal Chairman, Jimmy Goins said, “We are very excited about this program and I’m very proud of the current work by our tobacco program, improving the health of our people, through youth activities and cultural education on tobacco’s traditional and medicinal customs.”
The Lumbee tribal teen tobacco cessation program has five trained second wind facilitators that are currently petitioning the public schools systems of Robeson and Hoke counties to create and establish tobacco free schools. The cessation program was also instrumental in establishing an annual Youth Leadership Conference held in November and the commercial tobacco annual spring powwow. Further information on this program can be obtained by contact April Whittemore at 910-522-2220.
