First Youth Culture and Community Day held (March 22, 2006)

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina hosted the first of three Youth Culture and Community Day on Saturday, March 18, 2006.  The Youth Services Program of the Lumbee Tribe will sponsor the free cultural awareness program every third Saturday of the month, for the next three months in Tribal District 13 with represents Cumberland County, the communities of Parkton, Lumber Bridge and North St. Pauls.

Youth Culture and Community Day includes a culture workshop, detailing the aspects of powwow dances and origins, along with a pottery workshop for the American Indians of the woodland region. This service will allow the Youth Services of the Lumbee Tribe to further branch out and further involve the youth in Tribal District 13.

Tribal District 13 representative, Ricky Burnett said, “I would like to see all youth in District 13 active in the cultural classes.  It is time that our youth are given the opportunity to learn more about their heritage, and I particularly want to thank the youth committee for Tribal District 13 on their hard work and guidance.” 

The Youth Committee for Tribal District 13 is Scotty Sweatt, Cheleste Evans, Becky Locklear,Candace Hardin and Sylvia Adamczyk.  The inception of this program strives to increase the availability and accessibility of tribal services and programs to tribal members within the tribal territory.  Further information can be obtained by contacting John Oxendine, Robert E.
