    LUMBEE 50 DAYS OF CELEBRATION
SUPPORT FULL FEDERAL RECOGNITION FOR LUMBEE TRIBE

 

Wednesday, June 7, 2006 marks the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Lumbee Act.

Have you ever wanted to help the Lumbee Tribe gain the full benefits that other federally recognized tribes have? Have you ever wanted to participate in a historic tribal event? Your opportunity has arrived!! Over the next 50 days, one day for each year that has passed since the 1956 act, the Lumbee Tribe is sponsoring a series of events to encourage Lumbees and supporters of the Lumbee to rally for full federal recognition for the tribe. The 50 days of events will also celebrate being Lumbee. Tribal members and supporters of the Lumbee are encouraged to participate.

Wednesday, June 7, 2006

  • Time: 4 – 6 pm
  • Location: Steps of Old Main on the campus of UNC Pembroke
  • Description: This traditional ceremony kicks off the 50 day celebration. The purpose of the ceremony is to remember our ancestors and those who came before us. The ceremony will include Southern Suns drum group, a traditional blessing by Ray and Tony Littleturtle, a Christian blessing by Rev. James Harold Woods, speeches by tribal leaders which will include the purpose of the 50 day celebration and recognition of the Lumbee Act, and celebration in spiritual songs. The public is welcome.
  • This was a spiritually moving ceremony which had the crowd harking back to the day when our effort for recognition was started by our ancestors.

Saturday, June 10, 2006

  • Time: 11 am – 5 pm
  • Location: Steps of Old Main then NC Indian Cultural Center
  • Description: At 11 am, in a show of solidarity and support for the Lumbee, a march will begin at the steps of Old Main (UNCP) and proceed to the NC Indian Cultural Center. Everyone is encouraged to wear your walking shoes. At 1 pm, after the march has reached the NCICC, a rally will be begin. If you can not make the march, join us at the NCICC for the rally. Refreshments will be served. The public is welcome.
  • Many local dignitaries were present at the ceremony which marked the our united effort to gain complete recognition. Many people attended both functions and stayed throughout the day to be informed of our current efforts.

Saturday, June 17, 2006

  • Bike Rally beginning at the Lumbee Tribal Office located on Union Chapel Road. The ride will consist of riding to the surrounding counties(Scotland, Hoke, Robeson and Cumberland County). Registration will be held from 12:00p.m.-2:00p.m..
  • The rally was a huge sucess with over 90 bikes in the group, the rally made it into all four counties of our service area and the weather held up for the ride.

  • Rally at the KKK site in Maxton. Rally at the site where in 1958 Lumbee gathered together to defend Lumbee territory from invaders. Its time to do that again come join us and rekindle that spirit of Lumbee Power.

Things you can do:

    • Encourage friends and families to participate in the celebration
    • Forward this email to Lumbees and friends of the Lumbee throughout your email network in hopes that it spreads across the land of the Lumbee and the globe.
    • Email/phone/write your representatives in Congress and ask them to support either Senate bill S.660 or House of Representatives bill H.R. 21. Contact information is coming soon!
    • Ask Lumbees LIVING OUTSIDE North Carolina to contact THEIR representatives in Congress. The bill needs support from members of Congress outside North Carolina.
