MISS INDIAN NORTH CAROLINA My name is Samantha Brett Locklear. As a native of Pembroke, I am the 20 year old daughter of Tim Locklear and Denise Maynor. My grandparents are Charlie and Helen Faye Locklear from the Prospect community, Betsy Maynor and Clayton Maynor, from the Union Chapel/Maynor Center areas. I graduated from South Robeson High in 2004 and was very involved with several extracurricular activities while there. I received the Gates Millennium Scholarship my senior year. I was involved with the North Carolina Native American Youth Org. (NCNAYO) before and during high school totaling 6 years. I now volunteer as an advisor for the group. I attend NC State University where I am a rising junior in Political Science, concentrating on the Social Studies Teaching Education Option track. I am very involved in several organizations on campus including my sorority, Sigma Omicron Epsilon (the 2nd Native sorority est. 1997), the Native American Student Assoc. (NASA) and the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES). I was crowned Miss Indian NC on the night of March 10th, 2006 @ the annual NC Adult Indian UNITY Conference held at the North Raleigh Hilton. I have been dancing and singing (some) on the powwow circuit for nearly 6 years now and this has been an honor that I have dreamt of many times over. Because I didn't really understand and experience the intensity of our beautiful heritage until the ripe age of 14 years old, this is the basis of my platform for my reigning year. It is entitled as Youth Cultural Awareness. I will be travelling to various events and for appearances throughout the year. If anyone would like to schedule an appearance or request my presence at an event, simply email me at this address : MissIndianNC_06-07@hotmail.com !!!
