NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN

Councilman Sanford Locklear, District 4, Councilwoman Frances Chavis, District 6,along with other Council Members, Lumbee Tribal staff and tribal members are seen here presenting Mrs. Helen Sherbeck, the assistant Director for Public Programs at the Museum, with a traditional Lumbee Pinecone basket. Mrs. Loretta Oxendine of Pembroke, NC, designed the pinecone basket.

The presentation took place during the celebration of the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian located in Washington DC. The beautiful basket is a longstanding part of the rich and deep history of the Lumbee Tribe. The basket is made of pine straw and twine woven together with patience and skill by Mrs. Loretta Oxendine. The basket is one of the first artifacts that will be placed in the museum on behalf of the Lumbee Tribe.
