HEARING ON H.R. 898

The U.S. House of Representative's Committee on Reources hearing was held on April 1, 2004, in the Longworth Senate Office Building in Washington, DC. The hearing was attended by the committee chair Congressman Richard Pombo (R-CA), ranking Democrat Congressman Nick Rahall (D-WV), Congressman Walter Jones (R-NC), Congressman Jim Gibbons (R-NV), Congressman Greg Walden (R-OR), Congressman Steven Pearce (R-NM), Congressman Rob Bishop (R-UT), Congressman Dale Kildee (D-MI), Congressman Eni Faleomavaega (D-AS), Congressman Neil Abercrombie (D-HI), Congressman Frank Pallone (D-NJ), and Congressman Tom Udall (D-NM).

Senator Elizabeth Dole (R-NC), Congressman Mike McIntyre (D-NC), and Congressman Richard Burr (R-NC) presented testimony in support of the bill. Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins served as the tribe's chief witness. Arlinda Locklear, the tribe's attorney, Dr. Jack Campisi, Mr. Michael Olsen from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Mr. R. Lee Fleming of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Chief Michell Hicks from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Mr. James T. Martin of United South and Eastern tribes, and Mr. William Brooks of the North Carolina Family Policy Council also testified before the committee.

Approximately 100 delegates from the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina traveled to Washington D.C. to attend the hearing.
