(December 2009) The Lumbee Tribal Chairman presented the Town of Stedman with a proclamation at its Town Hall meeting on Thursday, December 3, 2009 in Stedman, North Carolina.
“One of the most important things you can do in life is build relationships--we had a mountain to get over but we finally came down on the other side and what better place than in Stedman,” affirmed Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins, “we just wanted to say, on behalf of 55,000 people, thank you for opening your arms for our people.”
Before the proclamation was read the Chairman provided the status of the Federal Recognition Bill and expressed the significance of its impact not only for Lumbee people but all races throughout the Southeastern part of North Carolina.
Tribal Speaker and District 13 Representative Ricky Burnett did the honor of presenting the proclamation to Mayor Billy D. Horne, Commissioner Peggy Raynes, Commissioner Martin Jones Jr., Commissioner Belva H. Maxwell and Commissioner Gregory F. Wrench. “We welcome you to Stedman,” responded Mayor Horne after the presentation was complete.
The proclamation was an expression of gratitude toward the Town of Stedman for their dedication and commitment not only to the future of the Elder site but, the process of incorporating the $1.8 million investment into the community of Stedman.
