Ground breaking ceremony for Tribal District 13

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina held a ground breaking and blessing ceremony in late November for the Tribal District 13 Elder Site in Stedman, North Carolina. “Well folks, we finally got it and what better place than here in the Stedman community,” commented Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins during his opening remarks. “This Elder site is going to bring something this community can be proud of and this community will provide a place where you Elders can feel safe, no matter what time of day.”

The ceremonially blessed grounds will be the residence of 10 homes each having two bedrooms and one bathroom, a similar venue as the Heritage Haven property in Fairmont, North Carolina. It will also have a 2,000 square foot administrative building which, in conjunction, will function as a community building where the residents and surrounding community can gather for various functions in a drug and alcohol free environment.

“I have lived in Stedman for quite some time and I believe this community is one of the best places to live,” began Tribal Speaker and District 13 Representative Ricky Burnett. “It may have taken a while, but it’s something well deserved because without our Elders we wouldn’t have anything.” Afterwards Speaker Burnett introduced the Elders Choir to partake in the ceremony by singing a praise song.

The funding for the $1.8 million capital project is being provided by the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996 (NAHASDA) and development services will be furnished by Certified Construction Services, Inc.
