Call for Artists
The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina requests Lumbee artists to submit works for consideration for the annual federal recognition print. The Federal Recognition Committee of the Tribal Council of the Lumbee Tribe produces a print each year that is reproduced and sold with proceeds going to help defray the cost of federal recognition activities.
In previous years, the Lumbee Federal Recognition print has been provided by a celebrated Lumbee artist who has been a great supporter for this cause through their talent. “This year the Tribe has decided to have a contest and let any Lumbee artist submit their work for this honor,” said Federal Recognition Chairwoman Sharon Hunt.
The artwork submitted will be displayed at the new Tribal Housing Complex being built on NC Highway 711 outside Pembroke.
“I’m excited about this project and the building,” stated Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins. “This is going to be the first building Lumbee members truly own, and now our artists can showcase their talent for all to see, that’s exciting. I want everyone to submit something.”
The turtle fashioned architecture for the Lumbee Tribal Housing Complex was inspired by Native American Design Services. Local construction company, Metcon is scheduled to have the capital project finalized by the end of November.
All artwork submitted should be culturally appropriate and represent the quest of the Lumbee people to seek freedom, justice, equal rights and treatment. All submitted works will become the property of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, and the artist waives all rights to works submitted for consideration to the Tribe. Please submitt all artwork by November 30, 2009 for possibility in to the selection process.
