Young Society Singers crossed state lines to culturally enrich at Clemson University

(November 2009)Young Society Singers of Pembroke Boys & Girls Club traveled to Clemson University to culturally enrich at the Tiger Pow-Wow for American Indian Heritage Month on Wednesday, November 11, 2009.
“For the last two years I wanted an American Indian awareness event on campus,” stated Michelle Burnett, an employee of the Multicultural Office at Clemson as well as Lumbee tribal member. The youth received a rare opportunity of receiving a personal tour of the stadium, the locker rooms and football weight room with Resident Historian Bob Burnett where they were able to meet football players CJ Spiller, Miguel Chavis and Willie Korn.
Upon their arrival they received welcome gifts from the IPTAY Booster Club and the Multi-Cultural Center.  Before the formal presentation, Young Society, at 3:30 p.m., briefly performed in the courtyard in front of the student union. Afterwards, they ate with Associate Director of Multicultural Programs Christie Mediana, who also coordinated the event along with Leslie White of IPTAY.
According to Michelle Burnett, this is the second year they have been able to conduct this event and in previous years there has never been a time set aside specifically for American Indian Heritage Month. Burnett continued to explain how it was through her speeches on campus about federal recognition and the need thereof for the Lumbee people that the event was then inspired.
Young Society performed their cultural enrichment presentation in the Almeda Rodger Jacks Ballroom in the Hendrix Student Center. Youth Services Coordinator John Oxendine gave an overview of Lumbee history, culture and way of life as well as the significance and origination of each dance performed by the dancers. Young Society concluded the night with a special song and dedication of a seed pot to Clemson University.
