Today’s Scholar-- Tomorrow’s Leader

The Lumbee Tribe Department of Youth Services will be hosting its 6th Annual Youth Leadership Conference Friday, November 6, 2009 through Sunday, November 8, 2009 in Durham, North Carolina.
Over 200 high school students from across Cumberland, Hoke, Robeson, and Scotland counties are participating in the weekend convention. Various workshops will include topics on Tribal Government, Lumbee history, college admission and more. There will also be round-table discussions designed to consider their everyday life and identify issues affecting today’s youth.
To become eligible students have to be involved in either Native American Student Association (NASA) or American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) and have a qualifying grade point average.  The students are chosen by the school’s Indian Education Association Youth Development Specialist however, Tribal Youth Services sponsors each child.
The Youth Conference was one of the first programs started by the Youth Services Department for American Indian youth five years ago. The vision and purpose is to develop the youth for their future in areas of college preparation, money management and more.  As well as cultivating them to become future leaders in not only their Tribe but their community.
