Third Annual Scotland Powwow
(October 2009) The third annual Scotland County powwow will be hosted by the Lumbee Tribe Youth Services Department in Laurinburg Legion Park on Saturday, October 24, 2009 beginning at noon.
“This powwow is geared toward our babies,” commented Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins, “to teach them the proper etiquette and prepare them for our big spring powwow.” According to the Youth Services Department the powwow is open to all dancers, drummers and singers who wish to sign up and participate. “Day money will be awarded to all dancers, drummers and singers who register and perform,” stated Youth Services Director Wanda Locklear.
Those expected to make an appearance are; Pembroke Boys & Girls Club Young Society and Lumbee Trail Drum Groups, First Nations Red Sun Rising Drum Group, Southern Eagle, as well as dancers all across southeastern North Carolina. The Lumbee Warriors Association is also expected to attend in support of the youth as well, according to Youth Services.
Three years ago the Tribal Government recognized that Scotland County was the only county within the Tribal territory which did not have a powwow and saw it necessary to ensure cultural enrichment there as well. Each and every member is continually encouraged to attend.
Laurinburg Legion Park is located at 1103 Atkinson Street; admission is $2. For more information on the powwow or the Lumbee Tribe Youth Services Department please contact, John Oxendine or Terry White 910.522.2217.
