Veterans Stand Down Public Service Announcement

The event will consist of various departments of the Veterans Administration, including representatives of the Veterans Benefit Services, Veterans Health Administration and Veterans Cemetery Services. Representatives will be on hand to discuss and assist with VA benefits including health education, mental health issues, homeless veterans programs and substance abuse and much more. Flu shots will be available for veterans that present their military ID card. Vendors will also be there to answer questions and provide information concerning local services and opportunities. A traditional Indian meal will be served, native dancing will be provided for cultural enrichment and World War II Veterans will be recognized. Additional representatives from the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina will be at the event educating and assisting in areas of Elder Services, Energy Assistance Programs, Housing and Vocation Rehabilitation Programs.
The ‘Stand Down’ concept originated from the idea of removing battle weary troops from the battle field to a place of relative peace and security. Today, the Stand Down is a grass roots, community based intervention program designed to help the nation’s veterans, including those approximately 400,000 who are homeless. The vision is to provide information and support for all veterans and provide a “hand up, not hand out” for the homeless veterans.
It is strongly encouraged that all who are able to please attend. The event is open to the public and all veterans. For more information on the 2009 Veterans Stand Down please contact, Linda Locklear at 910.522.2220.
