(November 2009) Ms. Mollie Jacobs won the state title, North Carolina Indian Senior Citizen Princess, at the 29th Annual North Carolina, “The Wisdom of the Past is the Change of the Future,” Indian Senior Citizens Coalition Conference in Fayetteville.
Ms. Mollie, a 78-year-old of the Union Chapel community, competed against three other contestants sponsored by either North Carolina Tribes or organizations. She competed in the regalia competition and sang “We’re Having the Time of Our Lives.” Her court consisted of 1st Runner Up Ms. Wanda Locklear, 2nd Runner Up Mrs. Mable Moses and 3rd Runner Up Delphia Jacobs.
As the new North Carolina Indian Senior Citizen Princess, Jacobs will uphold her duties to travel across the state representing Indian Senior Citizen’s at Tribal events, parades and conferences or other events invited to engage in. Amongst other things, she will be educating non-native people on American Indian culture and awareness, encouraging youth to work hard to achieve their dreams and to be proud of whom they are as an American Indian.
The North Carolina Indian Senior Citizens Coalition is a non-profit corporation established in 1981 for the purpose of promoting the advancement of educational, scientific, health and religious activities among Indian senior citizens in the state. Jacobs’ title of Senior Miss Lumbee has been accepted by 1st Runner Up Ms. Helen Campbell, who will have reign for the remaining six months.
