“I would like to thank all our players and sponsors for supporting this tournament, despite the tough economic times” Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins

Annual Federal Recognition Golf tourney a success

The annual Lumbee Federal Recognition golf tournament held recently at the Riverside Golf Course in Pembroke was a huge success. “I would like to thank all our players and sponsors for supporting this tournament, despite the tough economic times” said Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins.

With 57 players and more than16 sponsors, the golfers enjoyed a beautiful day, playing golf along the Lumbee River. Tournament specials such as the longest drive or closest to the pin contests were also held with cash prizes given.

This year, two teams tied for first place, so both teams received the first and second prize money of $450 total to split among the contestants. The winners are: Truman Lowery, Nic Lowery, and Ben Collins on the first team(pictured right); with the other team consisting of David Oxendine, Mickey Strickland and Garreck Oxendine.

“I really appreciate the support of the players and particularly the continued support of our sponsors,” states Doug Locklear, Community Resource Coordinator. “It is through their continued support that we are able to fund our recognition efforts.”

The event is held annually to raise funds for ongoing full federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. Currently the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has a federal recognition bill that corrects the grave injustice done to the Lumbee people by the 1956 Lumbee Act.

Currently the Lumbee Acknowledgement Act has passed the House of Representatives and is currently in the United States Senate awaiting a floor vote. For further information please contact Alex Baker at 910.522.2202.

(Past Story)Tribe to host annual federal recognition golf tourney

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina will host the annual Federal Recognition Golf Tournament at the Riverside Golf Club at the North Carolina Indian Culture Center on Friday, August 14. Registration starts at 11am and will last until 1pm. Lunch will be served between 11:30 and 12:30 pm, with shotgun start at 1pm. Golf cart, lunch and giveaways included with registration.

The tourney is a 3 man super ball tournament, with registration $50 per person or $150 per team. Team entry deadline is Wednesday August 12. All proceeds got to support the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina’s federal recognition efforts. First place prize is $300 and second place is $150.

“This is the most excited I have ever been about our chances in the Congress,” states Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins. “The difference this time being we have the written support of President Obama and that of the Department of Interior, or the BIA.”

The Department of Interior, through the Bureau of Indian Affairs, came out in support of full federal recognition, at the House hearing in April 2009. Finally after 11 conclusive studies, that all state and conclude the Lumbee to be a distinct Indian community and tribe, the Bureau of Indian has overcome bias and prejudice to issue this support which has the Lumbee tribal membership excited.

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has been seeking full federal recognition and services since 1888. Currently the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has a full federal recognition bill passed in the US House of Representatives, with the bill awaiting procedures for a floor vote in the Senate.
