The Lumbee Tribe Welcomes the University College of the North

(October 2009) Faculty and administrative staff from the University College of the North visited the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 in efforts to further educate themselves on the Lumbee people and begin a new international partnership with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke American Indian Studies Department.
The Tribe presented UCN with tobacco ties and the pinecone patchwork; giving the meaning, history and significance of each. “I want you to see the intricate meaning; if you flip the pinecone over and hold it next to the patchwork,” stated Tammy Maynor, Interim Tribal Administrator, “you will see exactly where the inspiration came from; this is its origination” (pictured above-Tammy on left)
Of the faculty and administrative staff from UCN were; Denise Henning, president and vice chancellor; Doris Young, advisor to the president on Aboriginal Affairs(Pictured below-left); Norma Jo Baker, dean of Arts and Sciences; Carol Girling, director of Enrollment Services and registrar; and Suzie Nemeth, executive officer and advisor to the president.
“They were eager to visit the heart of Lumbee country and looked forward to learning about what UNCP will offer UCN students,” Dr. Stremlau said, an American Indian Studies/History faculty member.  The purpose of the partnership between UNC, located in Canada, and UNC-P is to create a study abroad program.  To solidify the collaboration there was a special signing held at Old Main in the Native American Resource Center on October 6, 2009. The University College of the North is an institution that caters to the northern development and reflects the Aboriginal reality of northern Manitoba.
The plans include shared courses via video conferencing, summer trips to UCN, hosting UCN students in Pembroke and semester-long exchanges that include original culture camps; the program should begin in the 2010/2011 academic year.
