6th Annual Youth Leadership Conference

(November 2009) The Lumbee Tribe Department of Youth Services took various high school students to Durham, North Carolina from Friday, November 6, 2009 until Sunday, November 8, 2009 for the 6th Annual Youth Leadership Conference.
“The main purpose you are here this weekend is we have to start training our future leaders. One day I grant you, somebody in this room is going to be standing exactly where I’m standing and I want to make sure you are prepared,” advised Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins.
Students from Hoke High, East Columbus, Early College Hoke, Lumberton High, Purnell Swett, Red Springs, St. Pauls, Fairmont High, South Robeson, Early College Robeson, First Nation Boys & Girls Club, Pembroke Boys & Girls Club, Scotland High, Jack Britt, Cape Fear, Gray’s Creek and Douglas Bird were exposed to guest speakers and workshops on how to develop themselves in furthering their leadership skills and personal growth. The students received personal tours of both the Museum of Natural Sciences and Museum of History where they were culturally educated on American Indian artistry. This was later supported by a session on Lumbee Indian and North Carolina American Indian history with Amber Holland.  Other sessions provided to the students were College Preparation with Mickey(pictured below)and Tiffany Locklear, and Tribal Governance with Leon Jacobs and Tammy Maynor.
“You inspired me today, the enthusiasm that I see from all of you makes me feel really good and to have the Chairman here to cap off the weekend is really terrific,” commented former Tribal Administrator Leon Jacobs(pictured right) as he spoke at the evening dinner on Saturday. The conference concluded on Sunday with a morning service by Reverend Terry Hunt.
